Rally is the newest exciting and fun addition to AKC's list of titling sports effective January 1,
2005.
Rally is often described as a cross between agility and obedience but without the difficulty
of either of them at the higher levels.
In Rally, the dog and handler complete a course that has been designed by the Rally judge. There
are of 10-20 exercises (depending on the level) that are on signs attached to numbered holders.
The team of dog and handler move continuously at a brisk, but normal, pace between signs and then
must perform the exercise on the sign at each station. Unlimited communication from the handler to
the dog is to be encouraged and not penalized. Handlers are permitted to talk, praise, encourage,
clap their hands, pat their legs, or use any verbal means of encouragement. Multiple commands and/or
signals using one or both arms and hands are allowed.
Rally is rapidly becoming one of the most enjoyable sports for dogs and handlers. The
jump heights are lower so older dogs can compete with more ease even at the higher levels. Many
dogs are being brought out of retirement, and the special bond that develops between dog and
handler can once again be enjoyed by both.
Lilac City Dog Training Club offers Rally classes in Spokane as part of our popular 8-week dog
training classes. For more information on our dog obedience and training programs, browse our
